These two photos are sort of similar in visual design as the gate in illustration #2 - giving space around the subject. But in this case I can not say that I prefer one over the other.

The photo on the left is very strong; it brings your attention right into the picture and doesn't let it or your imagination wander. There are very strong shapes that make this a balance composition.

The photo on the right allows your imagination and your eyes to wander to the right side of the picture. As a result any person that views this photo is more likely to put their own personal feelings and thoughts into it. This is something that they wouldn't do with the photo on the left, as it is really a "In Your Face" type of picture.
