Question: Hi Garry, Please help! I am trying to decide upon which SLR camera to buy, I
really like the Canon Rebel 2000 but the photo manager tells me that I would be
wasting my money and should go with the Minolta SLR I really want the Canon
but, Is the Minolta better? Please help! |
Answer: Tough question! I get a lot of inquiries about which camera or lens is better. The reason that it is such a tough question is that the final choice really boils down to your personal preference. The first camera that I bought was a Nikon FE, I made my decision based on how the camera felt when holding and operating it. I didn't want to spend a lot of money on it (as it was my first camera - and only a budding hobby) but I chose not to get the entry level model or the top end model. The FE was the mid-ranged priced model - my logic was that it had more features than the base model, it was constructed better and if I really got seriously interested in photography I wasn't limited by it's lack of features. I still have and use this camera - occasionally, 20 years after purchasing it. I know this doesn't help you, but I will need to know what model is the Minolta SLR that they are recommending? In order that I can compare its features with the Canon's. |
Follow up Reply: Thank you so much for responding so quickly! The Minolta she was recommending to me is the Minolta STSI Maxxum, with
a 55mm lens, it has auto focus and manual focus with a quartz date/time on
the back it has all of the same features as the Rebel 2000 plus the ability
to take panoramic pictures, she (the manager of Ritz Camera) is telling me
that this camera is the only SLR with the panoramic feature. Which doesn't
really make a huge difference for me, I simply want good quality pictures. Thank you so much, |
Answer: I have looked at the features of both of these cameras on the
manufacturers web sites. If the Panorama feature is something that you must
have then the Minolta STsi is your choice. That is the only feature where it
is superior to the Canon Rebel 2000. But it is not a true panorama (it is
like my wife's point and shoot camera) where all it does is mask off the top
and bottom third of the picture. If you use this feature, your prints will be
black on the top and bottom third - with the picture in the middle. But you
can take a negative from any camera and turn it into a panorama picture if
you go to a photofinishing store which has a Kodak Create-a-Print machine. So
the Minolta's panorama feature is really no big deal! |
