Question: Well, like some of these people, I am looking for a career with photo.
And have NO clue as to where to start. Photography has been my hobby since
1985, in my opinion I have quite a talent for it (when it does not require a
flash). Looking into these "stock" sites actually depresses me
because I don't have a portfolio, or a career with some major marketing
place, etc. When I look into these sites I almost feel as if I am looking for a
"modeling" career.--They want some extensive background. I do know
how to take pictures quite well but need some major advice.. Thanks |
Answer: If it makes you feel any better, out of all of the pictures that I have taken outdoors, I have never used a flash either. The reason that you see so many "models" is that lifestyle images (people) are the #1 selling subject of stock agencies, #2 is people in business situations. Nature, landscape and travel are around #6 & 7. Basically there are two ways to go about selling your work. Either by
yourself or have an agent sell it for you. I have an agent that sells my
work, however like all photo agencies they take a large commission - but on
the other hand they have many offices around the world where they sell my
work. They also primary sell to advertising agencies, which means more money
- compared to editorial work. The great thing about having an agency sell
your work is that it allows you do what you do the best, which is taking
pictures and they do what they do the best which is selling. Here is a link
to what is probably the best web site on stock photography. http://www.stockphoto.net/ |
