Pascale - Studio Photo Shoot

Canon 5D MKII - SIGMA APO 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG

It’s almost impossible now to look at most photographs and not think to yourself “Has this been Photoshopped?” or “How much has this been Photoshopped?” Which brings up my question “What would you do?”

For years I shot with slide film, it’s how I learned photography. Now, with slide film whatever you shot is what you got, you couldn’t do anything in post….there was no post! As a result of that, I guess I am more of a purist in my style of photography. I don’t want to create pictures that look fake or un-natural, even though I do use Photoshop for every image I now create.

My question to you is: Would you remove the couple of stray hairs that the light is catching in this studio shot of Pascale? Some people might even think I should try to get ride of the lens flare. What’s your thought?

Office Christmas Party

December 8th, 2011
Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons

Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons

If you called our office earlier this week, you didn’t hear – “It’s a great day at Garry Black Photography!” Not because it wasn’t a great day, it definitely was, but the entire staff at GBP was away for our office Christmas party in Syracuse, NY. I also managed to squeeze in some shots of the Ice Rink and Christmas Tree at Clinton Square (another working holiday)

On Wednesday night we saw Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons at the Turning Stone Resort and Casino. I have to tell you that I was pretty amazed and impressed with the show and Frankie Valli!

If you call the office tomorrow you still probably won’t hear “It’s a great day at Garry Black Photography” But as soon as I get my own TV reality show, you will! If you watch Jeff Lewis on “Flipping Out” all of this will make sense to you.

Photo Shoot with Dave Cross

November 25th, 2011
Dave Cross

Canon 5D MKII - Sigma 85 f/1.4 EX DG

Last Friday, I went on a model photo shoot along with Dave Cross. Dave was back in Ottawa for a couple of days visiting family and also for his “Photoshopotography: Work Smart” presentation at the RA Camera Club. About a week before the shoot, Dave and I were going back and forth with messages about meeting up and getting together for an outdoor photo shoot. Which at the time seemed like a good idea, the weather in Ottawa had been much warmer than normal for this time of year.

Our model for the day was Tania, she has been one of the incredible models that we have had on the Model Photo Shoot Workshops this year.  Accompanying and also driving us around was another Ottawa photographer, Denis Duchesne – thanks Denis! After breakfast we headed up to the Wakefield Covered Bridge, it was cold, freezing cold. There was ice forming along the shore of the river. The warm weather that we had the week before, was now a distant memory.

After braving the cold for a while we then decided to go and shoot in a warmer location, so we headed off to a nearby stable. As we were going inside Dave just happened to mention that he was extremely allergic to horses, and that the only other thing that he was allergic to was cats. I snapped this photo of Dave as we entered the barn, hoping that a horse wouldn’t rub up against him and that a cat wouldn’t jump up on him.  Neither happened, though there were a couple of close calls. It was a great day of shooting and hanging out with friends!

Albany NY Workshop

November 7th, 2011

Empire State Plaza

State Office Buildings - Albany, New York

 Canon 5D MKII – Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 IF EX

I conduct a wide variety of customized photography workshops for individuals and also private instruction for small groups. This past weekend I was in Albany NY for a small group workshop with 6 amazing photographers.

For the on-location field trip we photographed all around the Empire State Plaza, which is just an incredible area. But I have to say that “The Egg” is one of the strangest structures I have ever seen!

Please contact Garry if you are interested in any of his workshops or classes.
