Upcoming Presentation NFRCC 2013 – March 15,16 & 17

“A Fashion Shoot, from Conception to Final Image”

There are countless variables to go into the making of a great fashion image;  Concept and Theme, Location, Lighting, Model; hair, make-up, clothes and posing, Styling, Post-Processing & Retouching, Photographic Composition and Creativity.  The photographer has to create everything that ultimately appears in the picture. Basically starting with an empty studio or location – a blank canvas.

In this presentation, Garry intends to demonstrate how the use of light can create form, dimension and contrast. As with every other field of photography it’s all about the light. He will also cover model posing/composition and will offer some post-processing tips.

Studio Shoot with Gary Fong Lightsphere

After my success in using the Gary Fong Lightsphere on outdoor shoots, I decided to give it a try in the studio. I was shooting with the flash off camera, holding it high above my head in my my left hand and directed towards Virginie with the white dome in place. The effect it creates is very similar to a beauty dish. I like it!!!!

More Lightsphere Lighting

Wednesday, August 29th, 2012

Here is a  set of comparison photos of Nessa showing the difference between using only natural light and using the Lightsphere Collapsible diffuser. The photos were taken early evening in open shade on a clear day and about a minute apart from each other, in exactly the same location. The amount of time I spent post processing is the same in both images. Basically all I did is I took one shot just using natural light, then took the other using flash (Canon 580 EXII) with the Lightsphere. The difference between these two photos is really amazing. I know which one I like better.

Ottawa One Day Workshop

Monday, July 30th, 2012

This past Saturday we had an incredible one day workshop in downtown and Byward Market areas Ottawa. We photographed everything from architecture, street scenes, panning shots of the Governor General’s Foot Guards, Melody our wonderful model and ended the day with a twilight shoot at the Congress Centre/NAC/Rideau Canal/Parliament Buildings. Already I am looking forward to running this workshop again next summer, what a fantastic day….it was over far too fast!

Here are some quotes from a couple of the participants:

Karen – “WOW!! What a splendid way to spend a Saturday! A leisurely stroll with old and new friends revisiting photographic principles through play….my idea of a great time. And btw, this pic’s a keeper! It’s a 10 (as is Melody). Thanks again for leading a stellar workshop. It was one of the very best. Let’s do it again!”

Alice – “Thanks for a fabulous 12 hours of workshop, Garry.”

Studio Photo Shoot with Maygan

Tuesday, January 17th, 2012

I spent yesterday afternoon in the studio photographing Maygan, it’s just far too cold to go outside. This coming weekend I will conducting a Studio Portrait Workshop where I will teaching many of the different lighting set ups that I use, as well as going over the equipment that I use. There are a couple of other studio workshops coming up in February and in March (date TBA).

Photo Shoot with Dave Cross

Friday, November 25th, 2011
Dave Cross

Canon 5D MKII - Sigma 85 f/1.4 EX DG

Last Friday, I went on a model photo shoot along with Dave Cross. Dave was back in Ottawa for a couple of days visiting family and also for his “Photoshopotography: Work Smart” presentation at the RA Camera Club. About a week before the shoot, Dave and I were going back and forth with messages about meeting up and getting together for an outdoor photo shoot. Which at the time seemed like a good idea, the weather in Ottawa had been much warmer than normal for this time of year.

Our model for the day was Tania, she has been one of the incredible models that we have had on the Model Photo Shoot Workshops this year.  Accompanying and also driving us around was another Ottawa photographer, Denis Duchesne – thanks Denis! After breakfast we headed up to the Wakefield Covered Bridge, it was cold, freezing cold. There was ice forming along the shore of the river. The warm weather that we had the week before, was now a distant memory.

After braving the cold for a while we then decided to go and shoot in a warmer location, so we headed off to a nearby stable. As we were going inside Dave just happened to mention that he was extremely allergic to horses, and that the only other thing that he was allergic to was cats. I snapped this photo of Dave as we entered the barn, hoping that a horse wouldn’t rub up against him and that a cat wouldn’t jump up on him.  Neither happened, though there were a couple of close calls. It was a great day of shooting and hanging out with friends!
